I'm in the market for a new vise. I've noticed a lot of them are pedestal vises. Has anybody ever used both? If so, which do you prefer and why? I presently own a clamp vise, and was wondering just how stable pedestal vises are?

Why do sharks circle a few times with the tip of their dorsal fin showing? - Because you taste better without the poop inside!

I have both for my vise, I bought the pedastal base for when I am tying where I can't get the clamp on, they both work great and both have their places. My vise came with the clamp and I bought the pedastal base for around $20. so not a major investment for the convienience.

It is nice to have both and I used my pedestal for years while travelling , until Dan Despres built me a travel bench, At home I use the clamp in my shop.

I have the Anvil Apex vise made in the USA. It comes with a clamp and a very solid pedestal base but I have yet to use the pedestal base on it. It (the base) is built heavy and wide enough I think to even spin deer hair with no problem. I'm impressed with the rugged build of these vises for under $100.00.

I could never get used to a pedistal base. I finally after years of wanting just got a Regal clamp vise. It's awsome and would never tie on anything else if I ever need to get another one.
